Trauma can result from any number of events and causes different behaviors or feelings in each person. Trauma can be caused by: * automobile accidents * medical procedures * abuse (physical, emotional, sexual, neglect) * death of a loved one * experiencing or witnessing scary events (natural disaster, domestic violence, frightening movie, suicide/homicide) * war * rape
There are many symptoms or behaviors that result from trauma. The list that follows is not complete. You or your child may have a few or many of these behaviors. * Flashbacks * Hypervigilence (on guard all the time) * Hyperactivity * Difficulty focusing or staying on task * Nightmares * Anxiety and/or higher levels of stress * Intense fears and phobias * Difficulty falling or staying asleep * Frequent mood swings (suddenly angry, sad...) * Clingliness * Increase helplessness * Bedwetting (in the case of children)
These symptoms/behaviors are common among adults and children who have experienced some sort of trauma. Working with a gentle therapist can alleviate these symptoms as the trauma is processed.
